Remote Worker Award's Environmental Policy

The Remote Worker Awards is aimed at highlighting the benefits of remote and home working.

Remote Employment is reducing their carbon footprintRemote working is about being on the move and increasing business mobility. Reducing an employee's commute to the office and allowing them to be more mobile or to be home based is one effective way of reducing your carbon footprint.

The remote working concept is environmentally friendly as it takes more people off the roads, thereby reducing harmful emissions.

At Remote Employment and The Remote Worker Awards, we recognise that our activities have an impact on the environment and we are proudly working on an environment management system that will reduce our carbon footprint.

In all our activities, working practices and business relationships, we are committed to protecting, conserving and enhancing all aspects of the environment over which we have control or can influence.

We shall ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation and regulations and take action to continuously improve our environmental performance and prevent pollution.

In particular we shall:

* Reduce the impact of energy use in our home office
* Reduce paper useage
* Source environmentally benign cleaning products
* Procure sustainable stationary products
* Reduce the impacts of transportation useage
* Reduce the total amount of waste produced
* Safely store and carefully use chemicals
* Increase the number of people working from home
* We will ensure this policy is implemented throughout our operations by implementing and maintaining a certified Environmental Management System (Phase 3 BS8555).

Our Golden Green Rules

Remote Employment is proud to be working towards the BS8555 with Global Action Plan. Our golden 'green rules' help us maintain an awareness of reducing our impact on the environment  and starts with the following small daily chores:

1. We turn off all office electrical items at the end of each working day.
    * Printers, computers, lights.

2. We recycle all office waste.
    * Paper, board, plastic, glass, waste and as much water as possible.
    * Weigh all outputs each week and continue to reduce consumption.

3. We reduce the use of office refreshments where energy is consumed.
    * Only boil the kettle when necessary and for everyone's use.
    * Only fill the kettle with the required amount of water.

4. We conserve office heating.
    * Use an energy efficient room for our home office.
    * Block out glare.
    * Increase clothing layers rather than using more heat.

5. We use road travel as 'a last resort' means of communication with clients.
    * Measure miles per week.
    * Use web cams, conference calling and audio conference.
    * Have meeting days, not individual journeys.
    * Average business mileage to be 50% of national average.
    * Work remotely as often as possible.
    * Use public transport whenever possible.

6. We use energy efficient lighting in as many appliances as possible.
    * Use long life bulbs on all wall, ceiling and desk mounted appliances.
    * Check energy rating before purchasing new appliances.

7. We want to maintain a 'paperless' office.
    * Use of online and digital media as a core means of communication.
    * All information is kept on laptops and computers with no use of paper unless absolutely necessary.

The Director's of Remote Employment committed to this Environment Policy on the  9th January 2009. Watch this space - over the next few months as we will be working to develop a template for home businesses that others can use to help them reduce their own carbon footprint. If you would like to hear more about this, please contact Remote Employment on  020 8133 6329  or  0844 800 8355
