The 2009 Open University Skills Award 3rd Prize was won by Sharon Bassett, from Pontybodkin in Flintshire.
Sharon has developed enjoy-a-ball.com (001) Ltd, franchise sports coaching for children. Sharon’s biggest goal is for children to enjoy learning in a positive and creative environment.
With her sports coaching business Enjoy-a-Ball she works with hundreds of children every week and they love to tell her stories. She wants to bring these stories to life both through coaching and as a writer, too, so the Open University's Diploma in Literature and Creative Writing is perfect for that. She would also like to explore a Sports Coaching course.
How the Awards have impacted Sharon and her business:
In the two months after winning the runner-up prize at the Remote Worker Awards (The Open University Skills
category), Enjoy-a-Ball (001) Ltd was also announced as the winner of a Flintshire Business Award (Women Into Business) and a Home Business Award (Home Office of the Year Award).
This success comes as a direct result of entering the Remote Worker Awards. Enjoy-a-Ball Co-Director, Sharon Bassett explains:
“I had read about the Flintshire Business Awards and the Home Business Awards over the summer but had put the information to one side thinking that a small franchise wouldn’t be the sort of business they were looking for.
However, I dug the information out again as soon as I returned from the Remote Worker Awards event and managed to submit entries (very close to the deadlines!).
My initial experience with The Remote Worker Awards was a real confidence boost, not least because the award management team was so supportive and enthusiastic throughout. They really recognised the potential of small businesses and remote working as a positive career choice. The praise for Enjoy-a-Ball locally and nationally has been fabulous as a result.”
Where Sharon and Enjoy a Ball are now:
Inspired by her positive experience, and the £500 Open University prize she received at the Remote Worker Awards, Sharon has also invested further in her ambition to develop her writing skills.
Alongside managing an award-winning business, she is now currently studying Creative Writing with The Open University and regularly contributes business articles to home business websites, including Remote Employment. Sharon has also just been accepted as an Enterprise UK ambassador.
